Boy Scouts of AmericaTroop 181 Bradenton, Florida

Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 181

Chartered 1984 (33 Years) by Kirkwood Presbyterian Church, Bradenton, Florida

It is with a heavy heart that we bring the news of the folding of our once great troop.  I can honestly say that the years spent and the memories made were some of the best of our lives.  The time and effort put into this troop by all it's leaders, parents and most importantly the young men who where members is a truly amazing accomplishment.  The memories and friendships made will bind us for the rest of our lives. Our troop may have folded but scouting goes on. Regardless of all the political and sensationalized news stories that try to tear down scouting, the core values remain. Scouting is the type of organization that the more you put into it, it returns three fold.  If your are interested in scouting, go for it! Find the troop that fits you best and get ready to have a great time.    We hope to honor all the scouts that once wore a 181 on their sleeve by leaving this site up as long as we can.  Please take some time and peruse the pages.  Maybe you'll find some information that will help your troop and in that way or legacy will live on.

Boy Scouts of America Troop 181

Troop 181 is a boyscout run and directed troop under the guidance and supervision of the adult leaders.  The scout learns and practices the moral values laid down by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907.  Scouting began in 1907, when Robert Baden-Powell, Lieutenant General in the British Army, held the first Scouting encampment at Brownsea Island in England.  Scouting is a worldwide movement with the stated aim of supporting young men in their physical, mental and spiritual development, so that they may play constructive roles in society. The Boy Scout movement employs the Scouting method, a program of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities, including camping, woodcraft, aquatics, hiking, backpacking, and sports.  In 2007, Scouting and Guiding together had over 38 million members in 216 countries.

The first Sarasota Boy Scout troop began in 1913.   Within the first year, Col. John Hamilton Gillespie, Sarasota's first mayor and a British scoutmaster, agreed to be an adviser to the group when he was in town.   The Sarasota Times frequently carried stories about the activities of the local Scout troop.   A 1914 article described a Thursday camp-out.   After a hike out to the country, each boy cooked his meal over the camp fire, spread his blanket on the ground by the fire, and then awakened at 4:30 a.m. for breakfast and the march back to town in time for school.   Later that year, the 14 members of the Stag and Raven Patrols went to Longboat Key for "drills and other exercises."  The photograph below came from the collection of Russell Woodfin
